What are Antioxidants? Why are they useful?
This question always comes up when I talk to people about antioxidants, and it is so important to understand. In the world today, we are constantly exposed to free radicals in the air, be it from cigarette smoke, X-rays, air pollutants or industrial chemicals.
This is terrible because free radicals harm the body, damaging DNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids in us.
How do free radicals do this?
Free radicals are basically molecules that have an unpaired electron. As we learnt from high school, molecules love stability and hate having unpaired electrons. Thus, free radicals steal electrons from other molecules causing a chain reaction of damage within our skin. This damage is also known as oxidative stress.
Antioxidants however, have a spare electron to neutralize and calm down the free radical, immediately stopping the chain reaction causing damage to our cells. Yay! That’s amazing because free radicals are responsible for a number of illnesses and diseases which we definitely want to stay away from.
It’s very important to eat healthily and keep the body with enough antioxidants to combat oxidative stress your body gets from free radicals.
Where can you get antioxidants from?
Firstly, you should change your diet and lifestyle. The best way to impact your health is to ensure what you are eating. Food such as blueberries, goji berries, mushrooms have a lot of antioxidants, plus they taste so good! What’s stopping you from eating them? ☺
Ever wondered how much antioxidants you have?
We have access to a scanner that is able to measure your carotenoid Antioxidant Levels in your body. It is non-invasive and using the stable level of carotenoid antioxidants in your skin helps us provide an accurate and reliable biomarker of your overall antioxidant health status.
